Year 1 (Beech)

Take a look at what the Beech class has been doing

 Beech Year 2009 / 2010

THE BEEBOTS

We worked with a partner to make maps and programmed the Beebots to travel round them in cross-curricular maths, ICT and geography work on a non-uniform charity day.

VISIT FROM A DOCTOR

Laura's mum, Dr. Bingham, came in to talk to the class about being a doctor as part of our 'people who help us' topic and continuing dedication to safeguarding and child safety at Avenue House School.

The children tried on a neck brace, crutches and a peak flow meter as well as setting real plaster bandages on their fingers and asking Dr. Bingham some very interesting questions about being a doctor.

The children learnt a lot and enjoyed the morning and continued to learn about how to keep themselves safe throughout the term.

Growing Cress

We have been learning about what plants need to grow by experimenting with cress.  We discovered that plants begin to grow in cold places like the fridge and dark places like the cupboard but that they do best where it is warm and light.  We found that the most important thing that plants need to grow is water.

We made a very interesting discovery: the plants grew best when they were covered with cling film.  We thought that this might be because the plastic kept in the moisture and heat like a mini greenhouse.

Star of the Week

We earn star of the week for excellent work or behaviour.  We are very proud when our picture and the reason for our star goes up on the wall and we get to wear a special star of the week badge.

Displays

 HONEY.

Our junior production in the Spring Term was 'Honey'.

 Cooking

We made a gingerbread house as a team after learning about recipes in English and homes in History and Geography.

Geography - October 2009

We are learning about our local area and the journey a letter takes in Geography. We all wrote letters to our friends and family, put them in envolopes with stamps and the address written in our neatest writing and then posted them in the post box next to our school.

History

In history we are learning about toys in the past. Some children brought in toys that their mummys and daddies used to play with when they were little for the form to look at. Toys from the Past

Learning about our senses- 15 September 2009

As part of our science work learning about the five senses we played 'guess the smell'. We found it strange not being able to use our other senses to help us guess what was inside the pots at first and we were surprised when some of the answers were revealed. Some of us found we have very good noses for identifying different smells and all of us enjoyed the investigation. Guess the Smell

We discovered that we liked the smell of perfume, cocoa powder and minty toothpaste the best. Garlic, curry powder and lemon juice were our least favourite smells as a form.
